Later we started to regret the way we’d treated him. Searching for a way to make things right, we began to put out food for the little vermin that scuttled around our house. At first we were repulsed at the way they multiplied, but soon we began to find them quite charming. Their shells are shiny, and they’re so inquisitive when they scoot about on the floor. At night they make an almost imperceptible peeping. I think you could say that, in our way, we love them.
