In the October 17 New Yorker (sorry, item not online), Hendrik Hertzberg takes Bush to task for reaching deep into his back pocket for an inoffensive court nominee. With criticism mounting, maybe Bush needs to think outside the box. If the whole Miers thing doesn’t work out, here are some alternatives:

1. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Two great minds for the price of one. Drawback: dress like poor people.

2. Casper the friendly ghost. Criticism goes right through him! Drawback: alleged homosexual.

3. An adorable puppy. Anyone who doesn’t love him is downright un-American. Drawback: none!
